Erik Vranken nominated for challenge cup “Healthier pig production”

Fancom’s research manager, Prof. Dr. Erik Vranken has been nominated for the challenge cup “Healthier pig production”! The challenge cup “Healthier pig production” will be presented during the symposium "Hogere Varkensgezondheid" on January 17th 2012, organized by Coppens Diervoeding and PIC.

The jury finds that Erik dedicates himself to increasing the health of pigs in an innovative and unique way. His approach contributes to the durability of the pig sector and is very applicable in practice.

The leitmotiv in the work of Erik Vranken is the challenge to reconcile economics, animal welfare health and house emissions. With the help of noise and image techniques Erik Vranken worked on the development of an early warning system for pig keepers. Monitoring and early signalling, so that the pig keeper can adjust the process at any desired moment, is a development Erik believes in. No more afterwards signalling of things gone wrong in the house. This helps to keep animals healthier, thus requiring less antibiotics.
